While I had planned an early morning departure, we didn’t leave the condo until 5:30am. And then we had to make a library run — Decatur is awfully deserted at that time of day on a Sunday! We drove by two police cars and an ambulance facing the wrong direction on DeKalb Ave; I hate to think what was going on at that time of day! Eventually we got to I-20 and had an uneventful trip for the span of I-20 through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

We made two pit stops on the 900 mile trip. One in MS and the other at the girls’ favorite place to stop, Texas Best Smokehouse. They highly recommend stopping there … Apparently, not everyone stops as infrequently as we do. I was overtaken by a Subaru form Cobb County no less than FIVE times on I-20. #tinybladderedspeeddemon

We didn’t play the alphabet game, but we did, at long last, spot a Hawaii plate! We’ve been trying to spot plates in state alphabetical order starting last June. We got to Hawaii quickly as we traveled on our trip out west but stalled at HI. Upon spotting the car on TX-31 outside Athens, TX, I shouted so loudly that Chloe jumped!

We made *excellent* time (thankfully the car-eating pothole didn’t do any damage) until we left Corsicana. At that point, the skies opened up. Visibility was down to absolutely nothing, and people were driving very slowly and some even pulled over to wait out the worst of the storms. At times, traffic on I-35 (once we got there) was completely stopped. We inched along, bit by bit, until we at last reached Georgetown, where we were met by a lovely double rainbow.
